Looking at Where, How and When Kids Play Video Games

We are taking a look at video games and children. This will be a 4 part series.

The Joan Ganz Cooney Center conducted a survey of nearly 700 parents whose 4-13-year old children play video games. The survey attempts to learn more about the role that video games play in family life and routines.

We are going to look at family life with Digital games. A national survey done in 2011 by the NPD found 91% of children 2 to 17 in the US play video games.

How often do kids play video games?
47% of children ages 4 to 13 play games everyday. As you can see older childern play everyday more. While younger play a least a few times a week.

Now let's take a look at gameplay by gender. 53% of boys play everyday while 48% of girls play a few days per week.

Where do kids play video games?

98% play at home in a living room type space. The interesting stat is 64% play while in transit. I do beilve this stat will go up with the release of the nintendo switch.

What devices do kids play on?

To my surprise 73% of kids play games on tablets compared to 60% on cell phone. Game consoles 69% are king for kids to play on compared to computers 61% and Handhelds 36%

How long to do kids play?

66% of kids play between 15 mins to an hour. At 21% kids playing 1 to 2 hours comes up third.

Let's take a look at the length of time playing games by age. For kids ages 4 to 6 53% play 15 to 30 mins. For ages 7 to 9 73% play 15 to 60 mins. And for ages 10 to 13 67% play 30 mins to 2 hours.
